Field Archery

Getting Started
Some do’s and don’ts, questions and worries answered

First and foremost. DO NOT buy any gear; all of the clubs have equipment to teach with. If you decide you like archery (and we’re sure you will!) we can advise you on what to buy and where. If you already have some gear, bring it along and we can show you how to use it.

You DO NOT need to be strong. A common misconception as training equipment is there to get you going not to stain or hurt you. We want you to enjoy archery and can cater for all shapes and sizes.

I won’t be able to hit anything! Of course you will, it won’t look good on the instructors if you don’t and even the best miss sometimes! The IFAF has a training schedule to get you shooting quickly (10-15 mins) and hitting the target.

Don’t get disheartened. Archery is easy to do but like all sports and pastimes it takes time to be good. Perseverance, practice and enjoyment will get you there. Don’t forget champions had to start somewhere.

Listen, watch, and ask. If you’re not sure about something ask someone. All of us like to talk archery and most will be glad to pass on information, hints, tips and ideas. If we don’t know we usually know someone that does.

Is it safe? Yes it is. From your first meeting with your instructor safety is of the utmost importance. After a while it becomes second nature and archery accidents are extremely rare because of this.

Is it expensive? You could ask how long is a piece of string? It’s as expensive as you want to make it. Basic bows start at around €130 and the sky’s the limit. Arrows start around €7 each. Tabs and bracers €5-10 each (you’ll have to come along to find out what they are!)

When do I have to join? That is really decide by yourself and how quickly you get hooked. We would like to get a commitment after 3-4 sessions due to insurance considerations.

How much is it to join? Currently membership of Dunbrody Archers is €60 per year which includes membership of the national federation, IFAF.
